Introduction to an OU cheerleader

Hi! My name is Jamie Andries and I am a Junior Public Relations major. I love being a PR major because one of the main focuses is communicating with others and I enjoy being able to meet and socialize with new people. I am a cheerleader here at OU, so I spend a lot of time at practice and cheering at games for football, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, gymnastics and soccer. I have been a cheerleader since I was 7 years old and I love being able to continue doing what I love while I'm in college. Besides cheerleading, my favorite things to do are workout, shopping and traveling. I love shopping so much because I am very interested in fashion and I would love to have my own store or clothing line after I graduate. I travel pretty often and have been to some really fun places, but I have never left the country. My goal this summer is to travel to at least one other country and I would really like to go to Paris or Australia. My favorite places I have been to are New York City, Florida and California. I love how busy it always is in NYC and I also love to go shopping there. It definitely isn't a city that suits everyone, but I think it would be fun to live there at some point.

I am from Allen, Texas and I have lived there since I was 5 years old. I have a Yorkie named Nike and I love her so much! I have my parents bring her to me in Norman any chance I can get since she can't permanently stay here with me.

I am also a Pi Beta Phi here at OU. I like greek life because it allows me to get involved on campus through philanthropic activities and other events just for fun. Being a cheerleader and a Pi Phi definitely keeps me busy, but I wouldn't want it any other way!

I never thought I would be one of the girls wearing oversized t-shirts, decorating myself with greek letters and glitter, but it sure is fun!

The sidelines are definitely my happy place. I love football season so much and I cherish all the moments I get to cheer on the Sooners. It is such an amazing feeling to do what I love in front of thousands of Sooner fans. Boomer Sooner!!

As you can see, I love to go to the gym to workout. (lol)

New York City. You can't take cheerleaders to the city and not expect some stunts get thrown! The past two summers I have had the amazing experience of coaching cheer camps all around the country. I made tons of new friends and memories as I traveled to new places with the friends I work with.

  1. That picture of you in New York City is fabulous, Jamie: what fun to be able to entertain people with feats like that wherever you go. That is so cool! And while this class is not like REAL traveling, you can use the stories each week to go all over the world, powered by imagination (and imagination tickets are free!). Maybe you could even look for fashion themes in the stories, or stories of women characters who are legends for their looks, like the incredible Queen Esther in the Bible, or Psyche, the bride of Cupid (which was not easy), just to take a couple of examples. I hope you will have fun with all that as you explore the stories each week!

  2. Hi Jamie! I think it is so incredible that you are a cheerleader! That isn't something that I would be able to do, so I really do admire all the hard work and time that goes into it. I am a junior PR major as well! I wish I had a pet dog, but my mother isn't a big fan of dogs. Also, what other classes do you have this semester? Maybe we could work together if you would like? Good luck for the rest of the semester! I'm sure you'll have a great one! :)

  3. Hey Jamie, I'm super impressed by your skills and passion, keep doing you. I'm a Theta and never thought I would be the sorority type, but I love it so I can completely relate to you on that! I am also super impressed that you are able to manage your time because I struggle and I barely am involved with anything! Thanks for sharing!

  4. Hi Jamie! I 100% agree, the NYC stunt picture is amazing! Cheerleading seems like such an interesting passion and sport! I have absolutely no coordination so I have utmost respect for those who do. I also love traveling! But I am one of the people who fall into the category of NYC not being for them. While I haven't been to Paris, I did go to the Southern coast of France, and it was gorgeous! I hope to be able to visit California some day.

  5. Hey Jamie! I am a senior and a Pi Phi sister! Although I have been so busy and excused from chapter so I am not around much. I have loved my time in Pi Phi, especially when I was more involved as an underclassman! You are right it definitely keeps you busy. I haven't been able to travel too much outside the US so I understand your desire to travel more!

  6. Hey Jamie! I love travelling too. Australia is on my bucket list and I actually got to go to Paris last summer! They city is absolutely gorgeous and you can just feel all the history and culture as soon as you get there. I was there for two days and walked about 30 miles just wandering around. Every corner has its own unique statue or shop or cafe. Oh and the food and wine were some of the best I've ever had! I miss it so much.

  7. Jamie,
It is nice to meet you. I am actually from Lucas, Texas and went to Lovejoy so I am not far from Allen! I too really enjoy traveling to many different places. I have not yet been to NYC but I am planning on going this summer! I am actually planning on going to Australia this summer after I graduate. I cannot wait. If you have never been to Costa Rica, you should definitely add it to your bucket list. Anyways, it was nice to meet you and good luck this semester juggling cheerleading and your sorority events!

  8. A Pi-Phi from Allen, Texas almost seems like deja vu for me as my girlfriend is also an Allen Eagle, Abi Allen. I can agree with you when it comes to traveling, definitely something I enjoy doing whenever possible. New York City is certainly on my list of places to visit eventually, mostly to go see a Yankees game. My brother actually visited Australia last March and had nothing but praise for the country. As for being a PR major the same as me, prepare for more work senior year in PR Research and Capstone than all of the other courses combined.

  9. You must be very busy with cheerleading and Greek Life. I know just being in a sorority alone without playing a sport keeps me busy. I am an Alpha Omicron Pi at OU. I never did cheerleading but I did play softball from the time I was 5 until I graduated high school at 18. I would love to have been able to play the sport I love in college but I dislocated my shoulder before graduating. You are super lucky you still get to cheer! I also love traveling and have been to New York myself. It was really amazing! I've never been to California but I lived in Florida for 12 years growing up. I would love to go to Paris as well.

  10. Hi fellow PR major! I also love traveling, Australia sounds amazing. I have wanted to travel to New Zealand for a long time now. I have not been to New York City though I have been to Seattle many times. Seattle is also a busy city nearly all the time, and a big city is not for everyone; but I do want to be able to say I lived in a city that never sleeps!

  11. Hey Jamie! A couple things: 1. My sister's name is Jamie so you already scored cool points lol 2. I work at Red Lobster with an OU cheerleader, Reid Roberts, im sure you know her lol 3. I've been to Sydney, Australia and Brisbane, Australia and they were both awesome!
I'm not too big on Greek life, but I'm glad that you enjoy it! Especially since it works in conjunction with your PR major. I'm a communication major, but interestingly I don't like communicating with others haha. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck with all your hopes, dreams, and aspirations!

  12. He Jamie,
Nice to meet you! I think it’s so fun that you are a cheerleader here at OU. I bet you dedicate a lot of time to that! It must be so cold to cheer in the winter! I wouldn’t be able to do that. Yorkies are so cute! I have only every had one dog. Her name was socks and she was a lab pointer mix.

  13. Wow, that's so impressive that you have time to cheer and be in a sorority and get your schoolwork done! I always love watching you guys cheer at football games and you guys always do a great job! I love dogs and Yorkies are some of my favorites! I also love shopping too and traveling! Going to Paris is a dream of mine because of the great shopping and the sights!

  14. That last picture is so cool! I love the people in the background doing a double-take!

PR is cool--I don't get why it has a bad rap for some people. I'm an Ad major but took Intro to PR with Pritch and enjoyed learning about it.

Also, it's cool that you like shopping. I don't usually have enough time/money to buy stuff without shopping around first, but I used to work at a boutique and it made me appreciate fashion a lot more.

  15. Jamie, it seems like New York definitely suits your personality with the upbeat lifestyle and fashion opportunities at every corner (literally). I share the same goal of wanting to leave the U.S. to visit another country someday. Hopefully you are able to do so this summer! I don't know how you are able to keep up with so many activities, but that is impressive. Good luck this semester!

  16. Hi Jamie, it's nice to meet you! I like your blog theme.

Having your own fashion line sounds really fun! I hope that happens for you one day!

Oversized T shirts are the way to go B-). So comfy.

Cheerleading must be hard work! I'm glad you enjoy it so much and I hope that you're able to go to Paris or Australia! Haven't heard much about Australia, but Paris seems so beautiful.

  17. Hi Jamie! I think it's really amazing how you're able to juggle so much work around. Being a cheerleader and being involved on campus at the same time seems difficult to make time for, but it's great that you were able to! Owning your own store or fashion line are good dreams to have, just work towards it and you'll get there.

  18. Cheerleading is something I don't think about a lot, but then I realized it requires an immense amount of situational awareness and physical finesse to do well. You must have some great stories about that! I'd love to hear that! I really should exercise more, but can't fit it into my work schedule...

I'm a bit of a T-shirt nut, too. I think I might have too many for my own good. Haha... They're the most direct fashion statement. I believe a T-shirt is a good way to know a person's interests since they often have brand names on them!

  19. It's great to meet you, Jamie, and that is so cool that you are a cheerleader at OU! I have secretly always wanted to be a part of OU Spirit... I bet it's fun to stay busy cheering for so many events and the greatest university! I hope you do open your own clothing line or store after graduation because that is such a cool dream and would be so fun to pursue. I also love visiting NYC and hope you get to travel outside the USA soon! I studied abroad in Italy and it was one of the best experiences of my life, so I highly recommend that if you ever get the chance. Best of luck the rest of this semester!!

  20. Hey Jamie. I think its awesome that you have traveled so much, and that you plan to continue travailing. I have never had the opportunity, so I am slightly jealous that you have. You seem like such an awesome and outgoing person- if you keep up your amazing attitude I am sure you will go far. By the Way, your last picture is both terrifying and impressive. I would never be able to do that, both athletically and trust wise, but I think it is awe-inspiring that you can.

  21. I definitely think I have seen you while at work at Oklahoma Twisters, so I’ll have to say hi next time! I was also a cheerleader for what seems like since before I could remember. My cheerleading career ended after high school though, so I think it is awesome that you are cheering for OU. Nike is such a cute name for your dog! I’m glad you get to see her form time to time. It’s really sad to have to leave pets behind, even if only temporarily. Good luck with the rest of your semester!

  22. Hi, Jamie! Yay, another Gaylord student! I am an Ad major here. I hope you can fulfill your goal of traveling this summer! If you go to Australia, please hold a koala for me. I also love New York, Florida, and California! California is my by far my favorite. The atmosphere is so welcoming. It’s really impressive you’re a cheerleader as well! Good luck on all your future endeavors.

  23. Hi, Jamie! I think it is really cool that you are a public relations major! I was actually just chosen to serve as the public relations director for an organization I am in. I have very little experience with this kind of work, so it is a bit overwhelming to think about learning so much. Good luck with finals! I hope they aren't too rough.

  24. Hello! I am glad you found a major you enjoy! That is awesome you are a cheerleader. I am sure you have made some great memories and friends from being involved in that! I have never been out of the country either, but I would love to travel somewhere like Australia. I am hoping to go on a trip once I finish grad school. Good luck with the rest of your semester!

  25. Hey Jamie,
It was really great reading about your hobbies and getting to know you! I think that is so cool that you get to cheer for OU. I have never been flexible so cheering for me seems difficult. Do you ever get nervous cheering in front of such a big crowd? I think I would. Also is it hard to keep up with practice and school work ever? Traveling around the would is something I would also like to do some day as well. Good luck with the end of your semester!
